The first reviews of the Aspire Zelos 3 appeared in spring 2021, and the mod is still on British shelves, sold alone or with the Nautilus 3 tank. Listings pile up figures, the leaflet folds out to a single sheet, and anyone unboxing it soon meets an error message or buttons that refuse to respond. We went back over it point by point, from the box contents to the last warning.

What the Aspire Zelos 3 is worth today

The Aspire Zelos 3 remains a compact, fully featured box mod. A 3200 mAh built-in battery, output up to 80 W and support for coils from 0.1 to 3.5 Ω give it every mode an advanced mod is expected to offer, from variable wattage to temperature control.

Its weak point is structural, since the battery cannot be replaced. For a mod that travels easily and handles mouth to lung (MTL) as well as restricted direct lung (RDL) vaping, it still makes sense. If you want to swap cells at will, look elsewhere.

Aspire Zelos 3 mod only or as a kit, what comes in the box

Two products share the same name on retailer shelves, a bare mod and a kit ready to fill. In the UK the kit also ships with a specific version of the tank, a point few listings mention.

The mod on its own

Sold alone, the Zelos 3 comes with a USB-C cable and a user manual, according to retail listings. It suits anyone who already owns a tank they like.

The kit and its 2 ml Nautilus 3

The Zelos 3 kit adds the Nautilus 3 tank and two coils, a 1.8 Ω BVC coil rated 10 to 14 W and a 0.7 Ω Nautilus 2S mesh coil rated 20 to 25 W, along with a spare drip tip and a pack of O-rings, according to Aspire’s manual.

Capacity is where the UK differs. Aspire builds the Nautilus 3 in 4 ml and 2 ml TPD versions, and UK rules cap refillable tanks at 2 ml, with nicotine e-liquid limited to 20 mg/ml in bottles of up to 10 ml. The UK listings we checked describe the 2 ml tank, so a 4 ml figure refers to a version built for other markets.

Size, materials and the power switch

The mod measures 81 × 38 × 28 mm according to Aspire. Its shell combines zinc and aluminium alloy around a large fire button, two adjustment buttons and a 0.96 inch colour TFT screen.

The detail that sets it apart sits underneath, a slide switch that cuts the power and brings up SHUT DOWN on screen. That switch is the real protection when the mod goes into a bag.

The Aspire Zelos 3 modes and the one worth keeping

The mode menu looks impressive on paper. In use, one mode covers the vast majority of situations, while the others answer specific needs worth identifying first.

Variable wattage and voltage

WATT mode sets output from 1 to 80 W, VOLTAGE mode from 0.5 to 8.4 V. Wattage reads more easily, since every Nautilus coil carries its recommended range.

Bypass, temperature control and CPS

Bypass sends battery voltage straight through without regulation, so output falls as the cell drains. Temperature control runs from 100 to 315 °C, with a preheat setting from 1 to 80 W and a TCR coefficient from 0.2 to 9.99%, and only makes sense with wire designed for it. CPS lets you draw a power curve across the length of a puff, with three curves held in memory as C1, C2 and C3.

With the kit coils, stay in WATT.

Setting up the Aspire Zelos 3 step by step

Everything runs through a single menu, and here is the path Aspire’s manual describes.

  1. Press the fire button and the ”+” button together to open the menu, which shows MODE, COLOR, BRIGHTNESS and EXIT.
  2. Pick an entry with ”+” or ”-”, then confirm with the fire button.
  3. In MODE, scroll through WATT, VOLTAGE, BYPASS, TC/TCR and CPS, then confirm.
  4. In TC/TCR or CPS, press ”-” and ”+” together to reach the values, preheat and coefficient or curves C1 to C3.
  5. In COLOR, pick one of five display colours, and in BRIGHTNESS, the screen brightness.
  6. To go back a page, press ”+” and ”-” at the same time.

Unlocking the mod and reading its error messages

Two situations make the mod look faulty when it is working exactly as designed, the button lock and the on-screen protection messages.

The three click lock

Three quick presses of the fire button lock or unlock the buttons. According to Aspire’s manual, once the mod is locked only the fire button still works. The lock therefore freezes your settings without stopping the mod from firing in a bag, which is why the power switch matters.

What each message means

Message on screenWhat it meansWhat to do
CHECK ATOMIZERopen circuit, no coil detectedrefit the coil and tank, clean the contacts
ATOMIZER SHORTshort circuitchange the coil and check the build
LOW BATTERYbattery too lowrecharge the mod
TOO HOTthe mod has overheatedlet it cool down

CHECK ATOMIZER is what other brands call No Atomizer, and our guide to the No Atomizer message walks through the diagnosis.

Which tanks to pair with it

The supplied Nautilus 3 is 24 mm wide. It fills from the top by sliding its top cap aside, takes press-fit coils and adjusts airflow through a seven hole ring, from 0.8 to 3.0 mm.

The 510 connector also opens the door to a wider direct lung tank. Retailer listings put the diameter limit at 27 or 28 mm, so measure before you buy, and remember that the 2 ml cap applies to whichever tank you fit. Our guide to picking a box mod helps compare it with other formats.

Battery life and charging

The cell charges over USB-C at up to 2 A from a 5 V supply, and the screen switches off once charging is complete.

3200 mAh divided by 2 A gives 1.6 hours, or 1 hour 36 minutes, which is a theoretical floor, since charging always slows towards the end on a lithium cell. At 12 W on the 1.8 Ω coil, the battery drains roughly half as fast as at 25 W on the 0.7 Ω coil, puff for puff. If you would rather swap cells, our comparison of 21700 and 18650 cells for a box mod explains what that choice changes.

Who the Aspire Zelos 3 still suits

The Aspire Zelos 3 suits vapers who want a compact mod with full settings and no cells to manage, along with anyone already holding Nautilus coils. Against the Zelos M80 from the same range, listed by Aspire with a 2600 mAh battery and no TCR mode, it keeps the battery advantage. Vapers chasing very dense vapour at high output will be less well served.

FAQ

Five questions come up often among vapers new to this mod, alongside everything covered above.

Do BVC and Nautilus 2S coils work in the Zelos 3 kit?

Yes. Aspire lists the Nautilus 3 as compatible with every coil in the Nautilus series, so existing BVC or 2S heads can be reused without an adaptor.

Why do some retailers list five modes and others six?

It depends how you count. The menu shows five entries, one of them shared by TC and TCR, while Aspire’s specification lists the two separately, which makes six. It is the same chipset described in two ways.

Can I vape while the mod is charging?

Aspire’s manual states that pressing the fire button during charging stops the charge, as a safety measure. It is better to let the charge finish before using the mod.

What does the CHECK USB message mean?

It appears when the charging voltage falls outside the accepted range, above 5.8 V or below 4.5 V according to the manual. The mod then stops charging. Trying another cable or another mains adaptor is the first thing to check.

How do I reset the puff counter?

Press the fire button and the ”-” button at the same time. The counter returns to zero, which is handy for tracking how long a coil lasts between changes.

Getting to grips with the Aspire Zelos 3

Behind unsurprising figures, Aspire’s mod hides two subtleties. The three click lock freezes the settings without blocking the fire button, and the Nautilus 3 sold in the UK holds 2 ml whatever an international listing claims.

For anyone after a compact mod with a built-in battery, the Aspire Zelos 3 remains a sound base, provided you accept a cell that cannot be replaced. The rest comes down to the tank and its coils, ground we will keep covering one box mod at a time.
